This spring, Westchester Community College will host the ESATYCB Annual Conference at its Valhalla campus, where the perennial issue of scientific literacy will be emphasized. As most of you are aware, the public's understanding of science is consistently less than optimal, even though access to the scientific information base has increased substantially. A simple Internet search (using key words such as vaccines, alternative medicine, evolution, or climate change) can produce as much misinformation as information, which can lead to troubling consequences with respect to societal health and public policy. So please join us in a dialogue with some leading thinkers from the fields of scientific research, public health and science journalism as we discuss some of the most commonly misrepresented scientific topics currently present the public square.
